Plan backwards from the wedding date
Start from the first function where a photographer is booked, not the wedding day itself. For many couples that is the roka, the engagement or the haldi, which can be weeks earlier. Count back six months, three months, four weeks and one week from that date, and slot each step in.
If your engagement is in November and the wedding in February, as happens often around here, plan to the November date. Your teeth will be photographed at every function in between, and the whitening holds.
6 months out: braces, aligners, implants and bigger fixes
Six months is the last comfortable point to start anything that moves teeth or needs healing. Mild aligner cases can sometimes finish in that time, but many take longer. Implants need healing before the final crown. Porcelain veneers need whitening first, so start planning them two to three months ahead.
I would rather be honest here than sell you something. If your front teeth are crowded and the wedding is five months away, starting fixed braces means brackets in every photo. Clear aligners are removable, and some couples start them and simply take them out for the functions, accepting the attachments on a few teeth. That conversation is best had with our in-house orthodontist early, not three weeks before the sangeet.
A missing tooth that shows when you smile is the other six-month job. An implant needs a few months of healing before its final crown, and a temporary tooth can cover the gap for the photos. If it is too late for that, a well-made temporary is still far better than a gap.
3 months out: gums, cleaning and fillings
Around three months before, get a scaling and polish, have any cavities filled and any bleeding gums treated. Cleaning removes tartar and surface stain, which on its own makes many teeth look a shade lighter. Gums need a week or two to settle after scaling, so this cannot be a last-minute job.
This step matters for whitening too. Whitening gel on a tooth with an open cavity or a leaking old filling is how people end up with a sharp, nasty sensitivity. Swollen gums also make a whitened smile look odd, bright teeth framed by red edges. At this visit we also check old fillings on the front teeth, because they will not whiten and may need replacing afterwards. A routine dental check-up and cleaning covers all of it, and if you have heard that scaling weakens teeth, it does not.
1 month out: teeth whitening before wedding photos
Four to six weeks before your first function is the right time for teeth whitening before wedding photos. The colour does not fade quickly, so there is no advantage in waiting until the last week, and the buffer leaves room for sensitivity to settle or a top-up. In-clinic and take-home whitening work about equally well.
Two pieces of evidence I lean on here. A two-year randomised trial found that both in-office 35% peroxide and at-home 16% carbamide gel lightened teeth with no significant colour rebound at two years. And a meta-analysis of eight trials found no difference in whitening effect or sensitivity between at-home and in-office methods. So the choice is about your calendar. In-clinic is one sitting of about an hour; take-home trays mean wearing gel at home for a couple of weeks. With work, shopping and family visits, most couples we see choose the single sitting.
Crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings stay the colour they are. If an old front filling looks darker after whitening, it can be redone to match about two weeks later. The same goes for chip repairs, which is why bonding comes after whitening.
If a chipped edge is bothering you, chipped tooth repair with composite bonding explains the options and timing. For how we do whitening at the clinic, see teeth whitening in Vaishali.
Managing sensitivity before the big day
Some sensitivity after whitening is common and usually settles within a few days. A lower-strength gel causes less of it with similar visible results. Starting a sensitivity toothpaste two weeks before, and avoiding very cold drinks for a day or two afterwards, helps most people.
A 2020 review found that 6–20% peroxide gels caused less sensitivity than 35% gel, and patients judged the colour as similar. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell us before we start and we will choose the gentler option. This is exactly why we do not whiten in the final week: if your teeth are zinging every time you sip cold water at the mehendi, that is not a memory you want. If sensitivity is an everyday problem for you, sensitive teeth: causes and fixes is worth reading first.
Final week: what not to do
In the last seven days, do not start anything new. No fresh whitening session, no shop-bought strips, no new fillings or bonding, and no extractions. Anything new can bring sensitivity, swelling or a shade that has not settled. Brush, floss, drink water and leave your teeth alone.
Skip charcoal powders and DIY lemon or baking soda pastes; they scratch and do not whiten. Skip over-the-counter strips, which can trigger sensitivity at the worst time. Do not try a new toothpaste. And if something does break, call us; a small chip can still be bonded at short notice.
Food and stains during wedding season
Wedding season is hard on a new shade. Turmeric at the haldi, endless chai, coffee at the sangeet, cola and red wine at the reception, and paan at the end of the night all stain. For the first two days after whitening, stick to light-coloured food. After that, a water rinse after stain-heavy drinks helps.
- First 48 hours after whitening: our usual advice is a white diet. Curd rice, plain dal, paneer, milk, bananas. Skip haldi-heavy curries, tea, coffee and cola.
- At functions: sip water between cups of chai. Use a straw for cola and juice where you can.
- Sweets: the mithai season is a decay risk more than a stain risk. Eat sweets with meals rather than nibbling all evening, and brush before bed, however late the function ends.
- Paan and supari: these stain fast and also wear enamel. If you must, rinse afterwards.
What does pre-wedding whitening cost?
At our Vaishali clinic, in-clinic whitening is ₹4,000–₹5,000, up to about ₹10,000 with a branded system, and the cleaning before it is ₹1,500–₹2,500. Small chip repairs are priced after examination. So a typical clean-and-whiten plan sits in the mid four-figure to low five-figure range.
Indicative cost for patients at our Vaishali clinic; your final cost is confirmed only after the doctor examines you.

Wedding smile FAQs
How early should I whiten my teeth before my wedding?
About four to six weeks before your first photographed function. Whitening results hold well, so there is nothing to gain by leaving it to the last week, and the buffer gives time for sensitivity to settle or for a top-up.
Can I whiten teeth the week of the wedding?
We advise against it. Fresh whitening can cause sensitivity for a few days, and the shade has not fully settled. If you are short of time, a cleaning and polish in the final fortnight is safer.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people get mild sensitivity for a few days. A lower-strength gel causes less with similar results, and a sensitivity toothpaste started two weeks before helps. Tell us beforehand if your teeth are already sensitive.
Should I do cleaning first?
Yes. A scaling and polish about three months before removes tartar and surface stain, lets the gums settle, and shows up any cavities that should be filled before whitening gel touches the teeth.
Are whitening strips safe before a wedding?
Shop-bought strips are best avoided in the final weeks. They can trigger sensitivity at a bad time and give patchy results on uneven teeth. If you prefer whitening at home, take-home trays made for your teeth are more even and controlled.
Can I fix a chipped tooth quickly before the event?
Usually, yes. A small chip can be repaired with composite bonding in one visit. Ideally do it two to three weeks before, after any whitening, so the repair matches your new shade.
