📅 Book Free ConsultationWhat Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment removes infected pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and saves the tooth from extraction. Contrary to popular belief, modern RCT with rotary instruments and local anaesthesia is virtually painless — and eliminates the toothache rather than causing it.
Signs You May Need RCT
- Severe toothache when biting or chewing
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
- Darkening or discolouration of the tooth
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- A persistent pimple or abscess on the gums

Frequently Asked Questions
With modern anaesthesia and rotary instruments it is virtually painless. Most patients are surprised at how comfortable the procedure is.
At Tooth Simplified most root canals are completed in a single appointment. Complex cases may need two visits.
Almost never. Preserving your natural tooth prevents bone loss, tooth shifting and costly replacement options.
Re-infection is rare when properly sealed and crowned. Good hygiene and regular check-ups keep the tooth healthy long-term.
Mild soreness for a few days is normal and managed with standard pain relief. Crown placement is advised to protect the treated tooth.

Why Modern RCT is Genuinely Painless
The “root canal is the most painful procedure” stereotype comes from 1980s dentistry — slow drills, weaker anaesthetics, no rotary instruments, and multiple visits stretched over months. In 2026, a modern RCT uses rotary nickel-titanium files, electronic apex locators, 4% articaine local anaesthesia, and a rubber-dam isolation system. Most single-rooted teeth are finished in one 60–90 minute sitting. Patients report less discomfort than getting a filling at the back of the mouth.
Does Every RCT Need a Crown Afterwards?
Yes, almost always — especially for molars and premolars. A root-canal-treated tooth has lost its blood supply and becomes brittle over time. Without a crown to bind the cusps, the tooth can fracture months or years later, often unrepairably. The crown is what protects your investment in the RCT. For front teeth with minimal damage, a strong composite filling sometimes suffices, but the call is made tooth-by-tooth based on how much natural structure remains.
Single-Sitting vs Multi-Sitting RCT — Which is Right?
Single-sitting RCT is suitable for most teeth without acute infection or pus discharge. Faster, less time off work, no temporary filling failures between visits. Multi-sitting (2–3 visits) is preferred when there’s active infection that needs intracanal medication, when the tooth is heavily curved, or when the patient prefers shorter chair-time per visit. Dr. Bandhavi decides on the first day after the x-ray — there’s no “premium” version; it’s a clinical call.
How Long Does an RCT-Treated Tooth Last?
A properly done RCT with a well-fitting crown typically lasts 15+ years and often a lifetime. Failure rate is 5–10% over 10 years — usually due to a missed canal, a vertical fracture, or new decay around the crown margin. We use 4× magnification loupes and apex locators precisely to minimise missed canals. If you notice any persistent dull ache, biting tenderness, or swelling years later, come in immediately — early intervention saves the tooth.
What to Eat After Root Canal Treatment
For 24 hours: soft, lukewarm foods — khichdi, dal-rice, soft idli, mashed potato, smoothies, yogurt. Avoid chewing on the treated side until the permanent crown is in place — the temporary filling is meant to seal, not bear full chewing load. No sticky or hard foods (chikki, toffees, hard nuts) for the first week. Most patients eat normally on the other side within 24 hours and feel completely back to baseline within 3–5 days.
Common Worries Patients Tell Us About
“Will I lose the tooth eventually anyway?” No — an RCT-treated tooth with a crown is functionally identical to a natural tooth for chewing. “Is extraction + implant a better option?” Almost never. An RCT costs a fraction of an implant and preserves your natural tooth root, which keeps the jawbone stimulated. We only recommend extraction when the tooth is genuinely beyond saving. “Will it set off airport scanners?” No — the filling material (gutta-percha) is non-metallic.
