TL;DR

For a US patient, Costa Rica is the better choice for small jobs — a crown, a root canal or one implant — because it is a 3–6 hour flight and the saving on a single tooth does not cover a long-haul fare. India is the better choice for large cases: an All-on-4 arch costs about $3,500–$4,500 at our Delhi-NCR clinic against roughly $8,500–$12,750 in Costa Rica and $24,000–$30,000 in the US, so the extra distance pays for itself several times over.

These are indicative figures, not a quote

India figures are indicative costs, shown in US dollars, at our Vaishali, Ghaziabad (Delhi-NCR) clinic — international patients pay the same clinical prices as local patients, and travel and stay are itemised separately because they depend on your dates. Your final quote is confirmed only after Dr. Bandhavi reviews your X-rays and records. Costa Rica and US figures are typical 2026 ranges from published price guides; individual clinics vary.

Where Costa Rica genuinely wins

Distance. From Houston, Miami or Atlanta, San José is a direct flight of roughly three to five hours, in a time zone close to US Central time, with no visa needed for a short stay on a US passport. For one or two crowns, a root canal or a single implant, India’s lower clinical price saves a few hundred dollars — less than a long-haul fare and the extra days off work. For that size of job, Costa Rica (or your own dentist) is the honest answer, and we will tell you so if you send us your X-ray.

Where India pulls ahead

Scale. The bigger the treatment plan, the more the per-tooth gap compounds. Six implants, a full-arch All-on-4 or All-on-6, or a full mouth rehabilitation costs thousands of dollars less in India than in Costa Rica — before you count anything else. Clinical work at our clinic is priced the same for overseas patients as for local ones; hotel, airport transfers and meals are quoted separately and depend entirely on your dates and the stay you choose, which is why we never publish a fixed “package” price.

Costa Rica suits you if

  • You need 1–3 crowns, a root canal or one implant
  • You can only take a long weekend or a few days off
  • You want a short direct flight and no visa paperwork
  • You prefer staying close to US time zones
Best for large cases

India suits you if

  • You need multiple implants, All-on-4 or All-on-6
  • You are planning a full mouth rehabilitation or smile makeover
  • You can stay 7–10 days for the main visit
  • You want the lowest clinical price for a large plan

A worked example: one All-on-4 arch

Take a single-arch All-on-4, the treatment US patients most often travel for. In the US it typically runs $24,000–$30,000. Costa Rica brings it down to about $8,500–$12,750. At our Delhi-NCR clinic the clinical cost is about $3,500–$4,500. That leaves a clinical gap of roughly $4,000–$9,000 in India’s favour against Costa Rica — enough to cover a round-trip economy fare to Delhi and a comfortable stay with room to spare on most dates. Price your own flights for your own dates before deciding; they are the one number nobody can quote you in advance.

For both arches the arithmetic roughly doubles in India’s favour, while the travel cost stays almost the same. See how an arch is priced in our dental tourism guide for US patients and plan the days with the free dental trip itinerary planner.

Quality, safety and the questions to ask both

Good clinics in San José and good clinics in Delhi-NCR use the same international implant systems, the same CBCT-based digital planning and the same sterilisation standards. The variation is between clinics, not countries. Wherever you go, ask for the implant brand and model in writing, a CBCT scan before any firm quote, the operating dentist’s name and registration, and the written warranty terms. Our implant dentist checklist works just as well in Costa Rica as it does in Vaishali.

Check the dentist, not the country

Whichever country you choose, ask for the treating dentist’s name and registration number in writing. Ours: Dr. Bandhavi, MDS (Endodontics), Reg. No. A-15692, Delhi Dental Council.

Practicalities for US patients: visas, time and follow-up

US citizens need an Indian e-visa, applied for online before travel; Costa Rica needs no visa for a short stay. India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of US Eastern time, so expect a day or two of jet lag — we schedule surgery after you have settled, not on arrival day. Implant healing takes the same three to six months in either country, so larger cases follow the same two-stage plan in both. For follow-up, our international patients get X-ray review over WhatsApp and a full record set for their home dentist, because we assume you will not pop back for a check-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is dental work cheaper in India or Costa Rica?

India is cheaper on every major treatment: an implant with crown is about $300 at our Delhi-NCR clinic against roughly $1,400-$2,000 in Costa Rica, and an All-on-4 arch about $3,500-$4,500 against $8,500-$12,750. Costa Rica’s advantage is a 3-6 hour flight from the US, which matters more for small treatments than large ones.

When is Costa Rica the better choice for a US patient?

For one to three crowns, a root canal or a single implant, or when you only have a few days off. The saving India offers on a small job is smaller than the extra cost and time of a long-haul trip.

When is India the better choice than Costa Rica?

For multiple implants, All-on-4 or All-on-6, and full mouth rehabilitation. The clinical saving against Costa Rica runs to several thousand dollars per arch, which covers the long-haul flight and stay.

Are Indian dental clinics as safe as clinics in Costa Rica?

Good clinics in both countries use the same implant systems, sterilisation standards and digital planning. Safety depends on the clinic, not the country. Check the dentist’s registration, get the implant brand in writing, insist on a CBCT scan before quoting and ask for written warranty terms.

Do US citizens need a visa for dental treatment in India?

Yes. US citizens need an Indian e-visa, applied for online before travel. Costa Rica does not require a visa for a short stay on a US passport.

How long do I need to stay in India for All-on-4?

Plan on about 7-10 days for the main visit. Some cases need a second, shorter trip for the final teeth after healing; the same healing timeline applies in Costa Rica, because it is biology, not geography.
