Dental Tourism India: What Documents Do I Need? (2026 Checklist)

Documents Needed for Dental Tourism in India - 2026 Checklist

Planning dental treatment in India? One of the most common questions we get on WhatsApp: “What documents do I need?” The good news — much less than you’d think. India makes dental tourism remarkably straightforward. Here’s the complete 2026 checklist for UK, US, Australian, Canadian, and EU patients.

The Short Answer: 3 Essentials

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your return date.
  • e-Tourist Visa (apply online — takes 24-72 hours).
  • Recent dental records if you have them (optional — we can do fresh imaging).

That’s it for paperwork. Below we cover each item in detail plus optional documents that may help.

1. Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date and have at least 2 blank pages for entry/exit stamps. Damaged passports (water damage, torn pages) can cause issues at immigration — get a replacement if yours is in poor condition.

2. India e-Tourist Visa — Step-by-Step

  1. Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in (the only official site — beware of paid agents).
  2. Click “e-Visa” and choose duration: 30 days ($25), 1 year ($40), or 5 years ($80).
  3. Upload: passport photo page scan + recent passport-style photo (2″x2″ white background).
  4. Pay by credit/debit card.
  5. Approval comes by email within 24-72 hours.
  6. Print the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) and bring it on your flight.

Apply at least 4 days before flight, ideally 1-2 weeks ahead. UK, US, Australia, Canada, NZ, all EU countries, UAE, Singapore are eligible. Full list: 180+ countries.

3. Dental Records (Optional but Helpful)

If you’ve had recent dental treatment or X-rays in your home country, bring digital copies on a USB drive or email them to us beforehand. Useful records:

  • Panoramic X-ray (OPG) — shows all teeth + jaw bone in one image.
  • Bitewing X-rays — close-up of individual teeth.
  • CBCT (Cone Beam CT) if you have one — gold standard for implants.
  • Treatment history — past extractions, fillings, root canals.
  • Previous dentist’s notes, if any concerns.

If you don’t have any of these — no worries. We take a fresh OPG and CBCT on Day 1 at no extra charge (these would cost £100-£300 in UK).

4. Medical Information to Share

Before treatment, share the following with us via WhatsApp or email (we maintain UK GDPR-equivalent privacy):

  • Current medications (especially blood thinners — warfarin, apixaban, aspirin)
  • Allergies (lidocaine, latex, penicillin, etc.)
  • Heart conditions, recent surgeries, pacemakers
  • Diabetes status (well-controlled or not)
  • Bisphosphonate use (Fosamax, Boniva, Aclasta) — relevant for implants
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Smoking habit

5. Documents NOT Required

  • ❌ Medical Visa (only for hospital surgery, not dental)
  • ❌ Visa invitation letter (e-Tourist visa needs no invitation)
  • ❌ Notarized translations (English documents accepted)
  • ❌ Health insurance proof
  • ❌ COVID test (no longer required as of 2025)
  • ❌ Bank statements or proof of funds

6. Documents You’ll Take Home From India

  • Detailed itemized invoice (for insurance claims if applicable)
  • Treatment summary (codes for your local dentist’s reference)
  • All X-rays and CBCT scans (digital + printed)
  • Warranty certificate on implants/crowns (we honour for 5-10 years)
  • Post-op care instructions in English
  • Direct WhatsApp number for follow-up questions

Insurance Reimbursement Tips

Some international health insurance plans reimburse overseas dental work. Confirmed reimbursement on at least partial cost: Cigna Global, Bupa Global, Allianz Care, April International. UK NHS does not. Australian private health funds (Bupa, Medibank) may cover preventive — check your policy. We provide international-format invoices with ICD/CPT codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum visa required for dental tourism in India?

Most UK, US, Australian, Canadian, and EU citizens can travel to India on an e-Tourist Visa (e-TV). The Medical Visa is technically for organ transplants and serious procedures — dental work falls under tourism. The e-Tourist Visa is online, valid for 30 days to 5 years depending on type, and costs $25-$80. Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before travel.

Do I need a medical visa for dental implants in India?

No, a regular e-Tourist Visa is sufficient for all routine and complex dental procedures including implants, full mouth restoration, and smile makeovers. A Medical Visa is only required for hospitalized surgical procedures (organ transplant, joint replacement, cardiac surgery) and is not granted for dental work.

What medical records should I bring from my home country?

Bring: (1) recent dental X-rays or panoramic scan (within 6 months, ideally digital DICOM file), (2) list of current medications, (3) any allergies (especially to local anaesthetic, latex, or antibiotics), (4) medical history (heart conditions, diabetes, blood thinners, bisphosphonates). If you don’t have an X-ray, no problem — we take a fresh OPG and CBCT scan on Day 1 at no extra cost.

Do I need dental insurance for treatment in India?

No, you don’t need insurance — but some UK/US insurance policies (e.g. Cigna Global, Bupa Global) do reimburse overseas dental treatment if you have receipts. Most patients pay direct (UPI, credit card, bank transfer) because India costs are so low. We provide a detailed itemized invoice for insurance claims.

Do I need vaccinations to travel to India for dental work?

No mandatory vaccinations for short dental trips (under 30 days). Recommended: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus booster. Yellow fever certificate only required if arriving from a yellow-fever country (some parts of Africa/South America). The UK NHS Fitfortravel website has up-to-date guidance.

What documents should I bring on the day of treatment?

Just three things: (1) Passport (we copy the photo page for our records), (2) Visa printout (electronic or printed), (3) Medical/dental records you brought from home. We handle everything else — admission paperwork, treatment consent forms, post-op instructions are all provided in English at the clinic.
