Short answer: not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. A wisdom tooth that is fully erupted, upright, cleanable and painless can usually stay. One that is impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed or damaging the tooth in front is better removed — and the earlier that decision is made, the simpler the procedure. Why wisdom teeth cause trouble

Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last to erupt, usually between 17 and 25, and by then there is often no room left in the jaw. So they come in at an angle, get stuck under the gum (impacted), or push against the second molar. A half-erupted wisdom tooth leaves a flap of gum that traps food and bacteria — the classic cause of the swollen, sore jaw at the back of the mouth (pericoronitis) that flares up, settles, and flares again.

A fully erupted wisdom tooth is often a straightforward extraction under local anaesthesia in minutes. An impacted tooth needs a minor surgical procedure — a small gum incision and sometimes sectioning the tooth to remove it gently — still under local anaesthesia, usually 20–40 minutes. You are awake and comfortable throughout; you feel pressure, not pain.

Recovery — a realistic timeline

They can, but many patients prefer one side at a time so they can chew on the other. Your dentist will advise based on the X-ray.

Is the numbness after surgery permanent?
